The Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern, nicknamed ‘Dramaten’, is Sweden’s national stage for spoken drama, founded in 1788 by King Gustav III. It houses several stages with the main stage accommodating up to almost 800 spectators. Both Swedish and international shows are put on, ranging from classical to contemporary, as well as shows for children.
The Art Nouveau building in which the theatre is situated is a great sight, even more so on the inside. Sweden’s most famous artists worked on paintings, murals and other decorations with a spectacular result. As you wander around or enjoy one of the 1000 shows that are put up annually, the sense of history is almost tangible.
